Three Helpful Sections
The site is organized into three sections that serve as a 2010 clearinghouse of 1) instructional resources, 2) education and research activities, and 3) a library of reference materials and links. All are intended to enhance Games-related curriculum development and knowledge in post-secondary learning environments.
1) 2010 Today Discussion Starters
These 2-page PDF resources are designed to help stimulate discussion while learning more about the Games. Each Discussion Starter summarizes key issues with discussion questions to encourage critical thinking. Some include a debate topic, and all include web-links to additional resources on the topic. The many themes range from activities required to stage the Games - staffing, venue building, tourism initiatives, transportation planning, marketing, merchandizing, and ticketing - to the economic, social, and environmental impacts of the Games.
These resources are composed with no predetermined bias: the e-Legacies team attempts to capture and present both sides of the 2010-related topics. We hope this will encourage healthy discussion and debate on controversial topics, appropriate for a post-secondary learning environment.
2) 2010-2012 Learning: What's Happening?
Instructors will enjoy exploring this list of who's involved in Games-related learning activities and research at Canadian and UK colleges and universities, as well as in elementary and secondary school systems. Innovative curriculum projects are profiled along with an instructors guide to the Top 10 Games-related online resources.
3) 2010-2012 Games: Online Resource Centre
A great head start for students and instructors looking for Games-related information! This free, comprehensive online library connects you to hundreds of research links, reports, statistics, trends, news and current issues related to the 2010 and 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Canadian and UK Partners
This unique collection of online tools has been developed by educators from across BC and Canada. The project is undertaken in partnership with the UK's The Higher Education Academy: Leisure, Sport, and Tourism Network (HLST) and Podium: The Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games. The intent is for this 2010-focussed site to evolve into a similar set of Olympics-related e-Legacies online resources for the London 2012 Games, considering further potential connections with higher education colleagues in Russia, preparing for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We hope to pass the torch of knowledge from host community to host community, boosting Games-related learning opportunities into 2012 and beyond!
